Isha
Bel
born
Natalie Walsh
is a dynamic performing artiste / songwriter from East Kingston
Jamaica. A woman of many talents, who has worked in various
capacities in the Jamaican music industry
Ishabel’s roots
reality songs and spitfire performances have been seeping into the
consciousness of audiences and listeners locally and internationally.
King Unrulee of Unrulee Rockers Intl (UK) dubs her lady lightning.
Bongo Herman and Fred Locks describe her energy and vocalizing as raw
soul.
Like
most Jamaican artistes, Isha bel was raised by Christian parents .
She and her 5 siblings attended church religiously while growing up
in gritty East Kingston, Jamaica. She didn’t quite fit in. Her
mother, describes her as a spirited child who questioned anything
that didn’t hold to scrutiny. She was socially conscious from an
early age and even recalls bucking heads with one minister after she
performed Mi
Can’t Believe it
by Michael Smith during a church concert. Her father Donald
Walsh(deceased ) was a singer, the songs he sung and the cassettes he
played, provided her with the inspiration she craved. She found
solace in music, the pen and the paper. She performed at
competitions and high school concerts.
Isha
bel first worked professionally as a member of former girl group 4th
Street Sister performing locally and in the Caribbean on the hotel
circuit and on shows such as Reggae Sumfest and appearing in several
newspapers and advertisements. After the group disbanded she worked
and toured as background vocalist with a number of artistes such as
Warrior King, Tanya Stephens Iley dred, Sizzla ,Morgan Heritage
Family ,Norris man .Jah Bouks Droop Lion. etc
Being
a songwriter, she toyed with the idea of releasing her own music for
some time. She began working with Hopeton Hibbert (son of Reggae Icon
Toots Hibbert) , writing and collaborating on numerous tracks with
some of the Road Dog Production’s releases with artiste such as
Yellowman. A single Loving Desire was released with South African
label Ghetto Sounds .An album Loving desire was released under
another moniker Systa Irie. Not much became of it .The collaboration
was short lived.
She
took a break from the active music scene in a quest to find balance
and control of her music and the message. Returning as Isha Bel,
she start making music that reflects her outlook on society, life
and spirituality . She will quickly tell “you cannot grow up in a
community like East Kingston and write only glossy songs “ If I did
that, I would be betraying myself and my conscience ”
She
began producing her own songs such as Only Jah , Bitter to better and
Vanity No Reality ,Duppy stories which will be on her upcoming album
which will be release early 2015.. She also collaborated with other
Jamaican producers such Alla Lloyd of Chalice, Computer Paul and
Everton “Caveman” Moore. She wrote and sang with other artiste
such as Wild Life and Fred locks . Alla Lloyd and Computer Paul are
producing several tracks for the album.
Caveman invited her in
late 2011 to sing harmonies on Sizzla’s, Grammy shortlisted album
“The
Chant”.
She recorded several songs with the label ,Domestic
Problems, In My House , African Woman and No Call the Police
.
A radio release of No
call the Police
was the official signal of Isha bel stepping out as a solo act on
her own terms .DJ Jacko of Bess Fm heard the track and start playing
it immediately. The song steadily became a favourite of listeners and
soon started receiving rotation Jamaica and overseas. “No
call the Police”
won
Irish and Chins 45 Sound Clash Competiton
in 2013.This cemented in the mind of listeners that a new voice is on
the scene.
With
a blossoming career as a solo performer, International reggae
audiences and producers start paying attention. She began working
with several overseas labels from Italy, France Germany. Several
songs were released such as One
Bag a Reggae” on the Come Back Again compilation - Sud Sound
Systems (Italy). This is Love – Yard Art Music (Germany)
Watch
Over Me -Irie Jam Production (France)
2014
began a brand new chapter with more releases and collaborations.
Legendary percussionist and performer Bongo Herman invited to sing
harmonies on his production of Dub Poet Fikre Selassie’s album.
Impressed with her work ,she harmonized the entire album and
collaborated on the single ,Mother. The song was produced by Bongo
Herman with Sly and Robbie on drum and bass. Reaching audiences as
far as Gambia, Mother was chosen as the official Mothers Day song by
Bess 100fm in May 2014.

mission she is. She is like the calm eye of a hurricane until she has
a microphone in her hand . Like her music, her performances are well
received. Her soaring vocals reach into the soul of audiences. She
performed on several shows including the Bob Marley Birthday
Celebration “Trench Town Rock and Peter Tosh Tribute to thunderous
applause. Irie Fm ‘s,Marcus Garvey Tribute , Mello fm Road Show

For
Isha Bel music is more than getting on stage and singing a song. For
her it is a journey into the young woman who stood quietly observing
and absorbing the essence of life around her. It is her way of being
the storyteller of the average person in the street . She stated her
music is therapy, no bling or pie in the sky living. It is firmly
grounded in what real, her take on positivity.
